Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy centers on individualized instruction, strong fundamentals, and the development of confident, expressive musicians. I tailor each lesson to the student’s goals, experience, and learning style while emphasizing tone, technique, musicianship, and thoughtful practice. My experience performing across all facets of music—including solo, chamber, and orchestral repertoire—allows me to provide students with a well-rounded musical education and a deeper understanding of how their individual playing contributes to the larger musical experience.

I strive to create a supportive and engaging environment where students feel encouraged to challenge themselves, develop independence, and discover their own musical voice. Whether a student is just beginning their musical journey or is an advanced flutist preparing for performances, auditions, or further study, my goal is to help each musician grow with confidence, find enjoyment in the learning process, and develop a lasting appreciation for music.

Lessons

Lessons will extend beyond performance, technique, and musicality to give students a well-rounded foundation for growth and success as musicians. Alongside developing strong technical skills and expressive performance abilities, lessons will include audition and competition preparation, music theory, performance psychology, and musicianship.

Alongside technical development, lessons will focus on musicality and expressive performance. Students will explore phrasing, dynamics, tone color, articulation, musical style, and interpretation while learning how to communicate the character and emotion of the music in a meaningful way. My goal is to help students move beyond simply playing the notes and develop a deeper understanding of how to shape and express music in their own voice.

Students will also learn practical strategies for building confidence, staying focused, and developing a positive mindset around performing. Audition and competition preparation will include selecting and refining repertoire, chamber music, mock auditions, stage presence, and learning how to feel prepared and confident when performing.

Throughout the learning process, music theory and musicianship will be incorporated into lessons to deepen students’ understanding of the music, helping them become more independent, thoughtful, and well-rounded musicians. Students will also receive practical tools for effective practice, memorization, goal setting, performance preparation, and navigating common challenges.

My goal is not simply to teach students how to play or perform a piece, but to help them develop the skills, confidence, understanding, and mindset needed to grow, enjoy their musical journey, and thrive as musicians.
